In the bonus track of the DVD of "Motherless Brooklyn, actor-director-producer Edward Norton describes the film as the story of "how the old city (of New York) got converted into the modern city in the late 1950s." This film project was nearly twenty years in the making, as Norton acquired the rights to an as yet unpublished novel, then completely rewrote it in his screenplay.
Norton's vision of the film was to convey the social and political forces at work to transform New York through a monumental program of building roads, tunnels, bridges, and housing projects. In the process, people were exploited, especially minorities, in the dizzying quest for progress. Power and its excesses were shaped into the cinematic form of film noir with gumshoes on the trail of lies and deception.
The central character of Lionel Essrog has a combination of Tourette's syndrome and obsessive compulsiveness. Lionel's nickname is the film's title as he was an orphan pulled rescued and nurtured in Brooklyn by a devoted mentor. Norton's interpretation of the character is at its most colorful dimension in an scene in a Harlem jazz club, where Lionel is blurting out impromptu works, keeping time with the improvisation of the jazz musicians. Wynton Marsalis performed the brilliant trumpet solo. Lionel was complemented on being perfectly "on the line" with his contrapuntal utterances.
